The streets were unusually crowded today, the perfect atmosphere for the young dark haired Turner girl to disappear in. To become invisible. She was used to being invisible to everyone around her, most people didn’t even register that she existed. Not even her own family. She hoisted her book bag higher up her back as she weaved her way through the crowd. Her clothes were old and the soles of her shoes were so worn that soon there would be nothing there to protect her small feet from the cold rough ground, despite this she always tried her hardest to look presentable. To look less like the homeless orphan that she was.
She paused next to a cart that was filled with various kinds of apples, taking a shiny red one off of the top as if to inspect its ripeness. Her empty belly ached fiercely. She hadn’t eaten a single thing in two days. Her brilliant blue eyes scanned the surrounding area, making sure that no one was watching, especially the owner of the cart. She dropped the apple in her bag, disappearing down the nearest dark alleyway as quickly as her small legs could make her go without being too suspicious.

Save struggled to keep her balance. Her weekly shopping was in order so she hustled off to town. Gillian wasn't around the commons when she got out. She wanted to invite him along, thinking it'd be nice for him to get out of the castle once in a while. He'd been cooped up in his quarters and his office for so long, it'd be a miracle if he didn't loose his color. She wasn't that type of person. With her sundress and espadrilles, it obvious that this plus sized woman was brighter than sunshine.
Her shopping bags were almost up to tearing point and she needed a place to gather this up. First thing that her eyes rested upon was a pile of boxes near the entrance of an alley way. She barely had a chance to rest the bags on the boxes before a few bottles of personal hygiene products dropped on the pavement.
"Oh, c'mon...", she said as she whispered to herself, looking around.

Elsie was small but she was also very quick. She had made it to the opposite end of the allyway in a matter of seconds, crouching down to sit on the dirty ground so that her body was half hidden in the shadows. She tore into the stolen apple as if it were the greatest thing she had ever tasted in her entire short lifetime. To her right now it really was the greatest thing she had in days and this time she hadn't had to go rummaging in the garbage to get it. Her blue eyes nearly rolled into the back of her head in delight, ignoring the sounds of bottles clattering to the ground nearby.

Save sighed in frustration. She kept trying to pick up a particularly stubborn bottle. She was now a few paces away from her shopping bags. She looked back at her supplies and then to the bottle, contemplating whether or not she was going to retrieve it any further. The outside of the bottle had filth and a bit of mud stuck to it from rolling around but that inside stayed uncorrupted. Clicking her tongue, she pursued the bottle and almost screamed in frustration as she kicked the damn bottle as she was reaching down.
"...No...", she groaned weakly. The bottle rolled into the dark corner of the alleyway at the end of it. She scuttled over and knelt down to finally trap that darn bottle in her hands. A look of triumph overcame her face when she cradled the bottle in one hand. She chuckled at the trouble this little oblivious bottle caused her. Then she heard a sound in the direction of the dark & shadowed area of the alley. She looked at it directly and squinted. What she was more of a surprise. There was girl, munching on an apple, all dirtied up and looking relatively harassed.
"Uhm...Hello.", she said, still kneeling while looking at her with a smile. She was surprised but freaking out wouldn't do wonders either. Save looked around to see if there was anybody else around. None.

If she hadn't been so distracted by the deliciousness of the apple, Elsie would have seen that she were to be caught in enough time for her to get away. She jumped to her feet just as the woman turned her eyes on her, thankfully her bottom showed no signs of the muck that she had been crouching down in but she did drop the rest of the half eaten apple in it. She would have pouted at such a tragedy if the other wasn't here, her belly was still rumbling. She didn't answer as she was spoken to, her young face going blank as she looked up at her with intense blue eyes.

"No,no,no.", Save said urgently as she held her hands up, palms forward as a quasi-default sign for 'I mean you now harm.'. Worrying about the girl, she regretted having to startle her since it made the girl drop the apple that she was munching on. Her knees straightened up as she stood from her position, still holding the bottle. "Don't be scared, please. I'm not gonna hurt you.", she said with her ever-so-sincere smile. The girl's eyes bored holes into Save's yet she refused to look away. It was her way of saying that she was being honest.
"I just want to know if you've got anybody else nearby.", she said to the girl, not risking a step forward. It might scare off the girl and she'd loose her chance to help her. "Like your mom or your dad...", she said, fishing for a response.

Elsie could see that this woman only had the best intentions but she had good reasons to be weary of anyone. Slowly, never taking her eyes off of the stranger, she half turned her small body to reach into the large bookbag that she carried on her back and pulled out a crumpled notebook and a pen. She never spoke unless she had complete trust in somebody but she kept a notebook on hand just in case there was need to get a message across.
"My parents are working." She wrote in her neat scrawl. It was a lie but Save couldn't know that. If she knew that she was an orphan living on the streets then she might try and send her away to some orphanage or force her into the school that she worked at. Elsie liked her freedom.

Save's eyes widened at what the girl did. She thought the girl would all out run away from her but, fortunately, she didn't. Save was the type of woman who's never had a relationship wherein she'd consider having a baby in but, even though as a young girl, her maternal instincts were intense and extended towards her friends. During her childhood, Save was the girl whom her friends go to when they've got a 'boo-boo' and there were no grown-ups around. As she looked at the girl, there seemed to be very little similarities between the two of them.
There was something unbearably haunting about the girl. Like she was insanely jaded for somebody so young. The girl scribbled something on notepad and Save almost exclaimed out a genius "Ah...". The girl was a mute. She reached for the note when the girl handed it to her and read it silently.
"What?", she hissed almost inaudibly. What kind of parents would leave a child this age alone for livelihood. "Uhm...right...Busy parents...", she nodded awkwardly. She tucked it in her pocket for no reason at all. She'd hate to dirty up the already dirtied alley.
"I'm Save, by the way. I teach up at the castle.", she said to the girl kindly. "What's your name?"

This time Elsie didn't bother with a reply. She didn't want to have to come up with some detailed story about her parents when she had finally rid herself of them and giving her name was probably one of the worse things she could do. Names gave a person meaning and if Save didn't have a name to call her by then she would be soon forgotten by this woman. She hoisted her bag up higher on her back, taking a couple of small steps backwards to put more distance between them.

"No, wait.", Save said to the girl urgently. Her foot paused in mid-step. She shouldn't be doing that. Just putting herself in the girl's shoes made her think that it would, indeed look threatening to the girl if she advanced any further. "No, please. Don't be scared sweetie. I just wanna get to know you, that's all.", she said. Save was being honest with all her heart. She'd learned this technique from a therapist when her parents died. The first step in trying to help a person is to assess his or her situation. That was what she was doing now.

Elsie wasn't afraid of this woman. She had always considered herself to be somewhat fearless, she just didn't want her new found freedom to be taken away from her. Adults tended to do that, they see a free child and then do everything in their power to lock them back into captivity. She looked away, her eyes briefly falling on the discarded apple that had fallen into the mud and muck. Maybe once Save decided to leave her be she would go try to steal another one.

Save watched Elise as her eyes quickly darted away from herself and briefly towards the apple that she dropped and then away again. Her first instinct was to look around for a replacement. After all, it was her fault that the girl dropped her apple.
"Uhm...", she said as she looked back at her groceries. She knew she did have a few loaves of bread over there. It was no apple but it was the best she'd got. "If you want, I have bread over there. It's my fault that you dropped your apple anyways.", she smiled to the girl reluctantly.
Or better yet, before turning to the alley way, she remembered a cart of apples right at the street. "Or I can get you a new one.", she shrugged as she pointed to the dirtied apple lying on the ground.

Elsie was actually quite surprised that the woman didn't offer her a full meal like most adults would when they found what they expected to be a hungry child. She supposed that the bread would do. It was something that would work at getting her belly full and she could also ration it to make it last longer. She held out a small hand for the bread. Save owed it to her, it was her fault that she didn't get to finish the delicious apple.

"Okay.", Save nodded that her baby steps were working. Maybe she'd have a go at getting to know the girl. First step, her name. She offered the girl her hand. It seemed normal for her. After all, she was as motherly as they come. She hatched a plan to get the girl to open up. She knew she can't help the girl if she didn't know anything about her. Maybe over lunch...She was reluctant. Save can only hope that the girl will go for her offer.
"Why don't you come with me over there with me, I'll need help with my stuff anyways.", she smiled at the girl. "And I'll also need company for lunch. You can join me.", she offered the girl with her soft voice. The best way to get someone to open up is to make them feel that they are needed. Right now, Save genuinely needed some help. There was a particularly small plastic bag that only contained a box of feminine needs. That's ought to do. Of course, she can't have the girl carry a significant amount. She looked like she's been starving.

Elsie was reluctant to follow this woman. She had held her hand out for the bread and instead of giving it to her she had taken it instead. Quite honestly she would rather starve than to help this woman. Just because she had found Elsie all alone didn't mean that she had some sort of duty to her. She adjusted the straps of her backpack on her shoulders with her free hand, her head shaking.

Save pursed her lips but her eyes kept that kind expression that always wore. She tucked a stray strand of hair and nodded towards the girl. "This is harder than I thought..", she said, having seconds thoughts on her life long goal to be a mother. Now would be a good time to say that she's not ready for that.
"Okay, you don't need to carry anything.", she said kindly. "How about I give you my bread and some apples so you can share them with your mommy and daddy later and then I'll get us some lunch so you wouldn't have to cut on the apple and bread. Isn't that better?", she asked the girl. She wasn't sure if this would work. She just wanted to get the girl to a safer place. Her parents might get worried but this was not place for a girl like her.

Elsie bit down on her bottom lip as she considered Save’s offer. It was actually quite an amazing offer, to her anyways as her belly was grumbling, and it would be stupid of her to turn such a thing down. It would be nice to have a full belly for once, she hadn’t had a proper meal since she had came to the island nearly six months ago. Reluctantly she nodded her head in agreement.

"Okay, that's great...awesome...", she said in relief as she waited for the girl to approach before proceeding to the cart with the girl. That bags were as she left them. Save was thankful that nobody has bothered with her stuff so far. "Hang on, I'll get the apples.", she said, hurriedly buying a few apples for the girl and her family. It didn't look like they had much. It seemed only right to share with her some of her personal blessings. She wasn't exactly rich but the fact still remains that she cares for others. Something her parents and her religion taught her. She hurried back to the girl and put the apples on top of the a bag she was carrying. She hitched the bags on her arms and started to walk, barely getting any visibility over her bags. Fortunately, not a lot of people were around. It's always been like this on the island. She turned to the girl, "I suppose we should go ahead,uuhmmm...", she said with a smile. "I didn't really get your name...I hate to keep calling you pet names...", she said to the girl, scrounging her nose as if she agreed that being called in pet names was a disgusting thing.

My name is Beth. She wrote, using her younger sisters name. Her sisters were far off in the States so it wasn't likely that anyone here would make the connection. She took the apples from the older woman, stopping just long enough to stuff them into her own bag. She followed Save obediently but she walked several paces behind to keep some much needed space between them just in case she wanted to make a break for it.

Save stopped a bit as she looked at the piece of paper that the girl wrote on. "Beth...", she said out loud as they continued their trek. "That's a nice name. Kind of grown up but it fits you, I think.". Save said to the girl trying in vain to engage her in a quasi-one-way conversation with Beth. She stretched her neck over her shopping bags as she looked for the nearest eatery. "What do you want for lunch? I'm feinding for some soup.", she said with a smile as they neared a particular eatery.
