Halo felt the all too familiar wait of paws on his face. He shivered at the thought senses frozen with absolute fear. He couldn't see how much of his face was revealed, couldn't hear the density of the grasshopper's comments. He managed to quiver his good eye open.
The sudden change from her natural face to that of absolute shock shook his head back onto his face. He quickly hung his head in guilt which in a way achieved the desired effect of the curse. He blinked his good eye to make sure the world was shadowed by his hair.
"Oh c'mon muster what little self dignity you have and get up" Said the old man/grasshopper quite shocked that an embodiment of the most powerful Mataan managed to be so.. Pathetic.
Halo looked up at her with one good eye. "I um...." He started. "sorr..." He stuttered. "This is why I don't like cats..." He said giving a glare a child would to someone breaking his toy. He then felt guilty again for blaming the cat. Looking at it empathetically. "I'm sorry cat..."

Elysia saw Halo hang his head. She heard him speak. But nothing could distract her mind from the single image within it. The dark eye, so different to the other, full of nothing but black.
"Mew?"
The cat's voice shook Elysia out of her shock-induced trance. "I... I'm sorry... Wha... What was it... that you... said?"

Halo looked up at the girl. 'She hadn't heard him.. a miracle' He sighed and looked up at her scared expression. "Umm nothing...." It seemed best to keep the reply short... Halo curled a finger into some of his hair as if thanking it for its thickness and how well it conceals him at the best of times.
"should i just go now..." He said afraid he might be burdening the girl with his presence. Maybe i should stop lighting things on fire.... Halo quickly dismissed the silly notion. After all he had a brief time of happiness with the girl...

Elysia was scared. She wanted to run, to forget what she had seen, to pretend that it hadn't happened. But that wouldn't help. Running would only make things worse.
should i just go now...
He wants to run too... Elysia thought to herself. Running solves nothing. "D... Don't go..."
Slowly, she sat down, carefully placing the cat into her lap once more. It's furry warmth acted as a source of comfort and strength.
"I... want to know... what happened..."

Halo looked down. Then the stuttering D's. He looked up. *don't worry there more scared of you than you are of them* He kept repeating to himself. He looked at the cat again who seemed to be as pleased as Nip that it had played with the hair.
"I... want to know... what happened..." "ummm.........." Halo attempted to begin. How does one start this story... He had never said it aloud not even to himself or the fire he so knowingly trust. He then realised he himself would like to know what happened. He couldn't really remember back then. "I only remember a fire..." He said remembering the drunken deamon with the red hot poker. "so much... so much hate..." Halo's expression went blank as the events went past his eyes.

I only remember a fire... So much hate..."
Hate... Elysia knew hate. Knew what it could do a person. Her father hated the world, hated himself, hated her... But she escaped hate. Fled as far from it as she could, before it could corrupt her as it had her father.
"I understand hate... It's like a demon taking over your soul..." she said quietly, memories of her own past flowing through her mind. Memories of her drunken father yelling obscenities at her as she cowered in the corner of the room... Memories of her flight from her home... Memories of fear...
"Who could hate so much to do this to you?..." she said, her fingers gently brushing on the hair once again covering Halo's face.

Halo looked down at the ground. who would hate him so much. He was jogged into the real world. The memories vanishing from his dark eyes in a spray of light. The second flash begun it was over. Who could hate someone so much. Only a curse. Only a ghost of a shadow. Nothing else could be so diminished that it could hate something that new nothing of the word.
Halo wanted to say the person but he couldn't bring it into the flecks of light that were his thoughts. He could simply cast away the question but it seemed rude and selfish. He echoed between a person and the image of his father. One vibrant echo of a great era... the other a hollow frame of a long lost man. "no one..." He said simply. Knowing that the creature he called his father was truly nothing.
"A man who lost everything... even his self... a man who towered over the thing that killed his lover..." Halo cringed. What was he.... He was merely the reason. He was the reason for a death... He was the cause and effect. He was alive purely because some one was dead and he was like this merely because someone was angry. He was so innocent that the thoughts would be fleeting but why they remained they remained as searing tears.

a man who towered over the thing that killed his lover...
Thing? What thing? The way in which Halo had said it almost made it seem as if he was talking about himself... But... Why?... Killed. Halo had killed?... How?... Why?...
Elysia tried to make sense of what Halo had said. Tried to think of a way in which Halo could possibly kill anything. Nothing came.
"...I'm not sure what to say...," she said quietly, awkwardly hanging her head. Why had she let her curiosity get the better of her? Why had she asked those questions? Why was she so stupid as to possibly think she could understand the pain of Halo's past??
"I'm sorry... Halo..."

I'm sorry... Halo... Halo sniffled. "my mum died giving birth to me..." Halo said hugging himself. From what he'd seen in picture books and what he read in them mothers were meant to be gentle warm and caring. He always tried to think of his mother as the light burning on a candle. "she must have been a great person to make dad so angry"
Halo stopped himself from talking as he realized the small tear at the corner of his eye. It was slowly growing scolding and it was searing his skin.
I feel so sorry for that boy... this curse... it takes him away from everything that could help him... The ol' grasshopper thought to himself taking a break from staring at Elysia. if by chance it had been anyone but this boy they wouldn't have survived With his own thoughts he slowly flew of deciding it was best to guide him another day.
"please don't be sorry..." Halo said quietly. "theres only one point to being sorry and thats to make it better.." "you already have done that so..." Halo flashed a childish smile at her. It was a pretty conclusive answer that Halo liked to give.

my mum died giving birth to me...
I guess that's something Halo and I have in common now... No mother in our lives... In a way, I feel even more sorry for Halo than for myself. I at least got to spend three years with my mother before she passed away... Elysia thought to herself.
"I'm sure your mother wouldn't have wanted this to happen to you..." Elysia said, taking the cat off her lap as she moved closer to Halo, "No-one should do this to their child..."
Elysia felt tears forming in her eyes, and noticed that Halo's eyes were the same. Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around Halo, hugging him as the tears began to fall down her cheeks.
