Evelynn walked silently through the building. It was later in the day by now, but the halls were surprisingly empty. Was it a holiday? Or was there something else going on she didn't currently know about? In either case, she knew the Masters would still be around, and they were who Evelynn was on her way to meet.
The third floor, if she remembered correctly, was where the teachers' offices were located. How many times had she gone there for help with her subjects over the years. Especially Latin. That had given her the most difficulty, though she'd enjoyed the class very much.
A small frown crossed her face as she searched for which Master to talk to. She'd heard the Headmaster was unavailable, but now where did she go?

It was raining outside. The heavy droplets were clattering against the window, as if to make sure Gillian noticed the dreary sky. The rain put him in a bleak mood, and staying in his office only worsened it.
Grey. A grey thought-color for a grey day.
He was tired of being in his office. It was nice, big enough, but it was devoid of both the suns light and any company. It was this that led him to abandon the papers he'd been reading and step into the corridor. He intended to wander the floors until he found company, or something else to occupy his attention.

To the left, closed doors down the hall. To the right, more closed doors. Evelynn sighed, and took a turn to the left. She intended to knock on every door until someone answered. Her shoes, sensible black flats, made dull echoes through the empty corridor.
At the end of the hall was a large window. Evelynn rested her hands against the sill and then leaned to take a better peak outdoors. It was raining heavily, the droplets belting the window in sheets. The sight brought the ghost of a smile to her face; rain was the typical weather on this island and she'd grown to love it since the day she'd arrived on the island.
The girl pulled away from the window and to the door next to her. As she raised her hand to knock, a door at the other end of the hall opened and out stepped a man around her own age. He wasn't a Master when she was at school. Her lips pulled back in a wide smile and she moved from the door.
"Oh! Sir!" she called out, making her way down the hall towards the man. Perhaps she could speak to him about a job.

Gillian was taken aback by the young womans voice, he hadn't expected to find company quite so quickly. He turned on his heel quickly, a grin already stretching the corners of his mouth. "Yes?"
When he turned, he'd been expecting a student. But this woman was too old to be a student, and wasn't anyone he'd ever seen before. It didn't diminish his delight in finding company, if anything, seeing a new face made his grin even wider.

Evelynn's smile only widened to see the large grin on the man's face. A touch of surprise was evident in his voice and for a split second in the look on his face; he hid it rather well. No doubt he'd expected a student, thus confirming her thought that he was one of the teachers.
The woman slowed as she reached him and held out her hand. "Hello. My name is Evelynn Caraste," she introduced herself. "I was hoping to find the Headmaster, but I was informed he is out at the moment. I'm here to speak to someone about a job." Evelynn wasn't one to beat around the bush, especially when it came to her future. She had two others at home to take care of. She and her brother could do just fine on their own if need be, but it was the tiniest addition to their family she worried about.

"Hello Evelynn. I'm Master Gillian Grey." He shook her hand with a warm smile. Looking for a job? Well, that explained her prescence here. Though it really wasn't so unusual to see strangers on the school grounds. The Academy seemed to be open to the entire Island and Lucian did nothing to counter that view. Gillian didn't mind. It meant he met countless new faces, something that always put him in a good mood.
"Yes, Lucian is out attending to matters concerning the Academy. Though I cannot give you a job, I can certainly help you." He turned and opened the door he had only closed moments ago. "Would you like to come into my office?"

His voice was nice, Evelynn observed. Warm and inviting, just like his smile and the steady grip of his hand as they shook. "Lucian," she repeated the name. "Is he new? I don't remember a Master Lucian when I came here." Evelynn had to giggle at that. "Though to be truthful, I never found myself at the Headmaster's office often enough to really remember."
She felt a small bit of disappointment when Gillian pointed out his inability to hire her. With two children at home, she needed to find a job, needed to find a way to provide for them. Evelynn flashed a wide grin when he said he could help her get a job. "Thank you very much," she gushed, gliding into his office.

"You used to be a student?" Gillian asked with genuine interest, following Evelynn through the door. "You'd know better than I. This is my first year teaching, I cannot say how long Lucian has been teaching here."
"Please, take a seat" He gestured to the old, though remarkably well-kept couches in the corner of his office. The room was large enough to allow for the beautiful pieces of furniture, and Gillian preffered them as an alternative to the formal attitude that came with seating guests on the other side of a desk. Rather than sitting himself, he walked over to the large window and unhinged the latch, letting the panes swing outward and bringing a rush of cool, rain-scented air into the room. The windows position against the wall of the ancient building prevented any rain from entering the room, something which Gillian was grateful for.
He turned himslf to face Evelynn with a smile, noting that his office seemed so much brighter now with her company than it had mere minutes ago.

The office was comfortable, much more inviting than she remembered. Or perhaps it was simply because of this particular Master that the room had such a friendly feel. "Yes, I was," she responded, sitting down on the couch. The material was smooth under her fingertips. "Not too long ago, actually. I'm still trying to convince my brother to come, but he insists on being tutored privately. I plan to send the littlest one here next year, though."
That was part of the reason she was hoping for a job in the library at the school. The child was fragile, with a delicate past she hoped not to have to reconstruct any time soon. But if something were to happen, Evelynn wanted to be close by to help.
The scent of fresh air and rain water drew her from her thoughts. "Ah, a first year Master," she grinned, remember the tricks her classmates had played on the new teachers. "I trust the students haven't been too unruly for you." Evelynn hadn't partaken in many of the pranks, but every once in a while it was a necessary act. "Regardless, you don't look old enough to teach. I remember my teachers having more wrinkles than I could count and teeth they put in a jar."

"I can't imagine you'd find many private tutors on an island this small," Gillian mused. He had moved to stand behind the couch opposite his guest, his fingers digging into the plush fabric. "He'll be missing out on something," Gillian said with a small smile. "I don't know if the academy has changed much since you were here, but I find it to be quite the experience. It's more than classes. I've never worked at a more appealing school."
His words were something of an understatement. Gillian adored The Academy. It had so many secret places, features that were centuries old. The entire Island was something of an anomaly, it bewildered his intellect, assaulted his knowledge of the possible and impossible. And the people here....So unusual, so unique. It was like living in an entirely different world.
"Oh no, the students are wonderful"Gillian said honestly. "I suppose it is my youth that makes the difference in their attitude. I have also heard on good authority that teachers like myself aren't the norm," Gillian chuckled, very aware of his exuberant style in both personality and fashion. "There are very few greying Masters now. It seems as if the old and wise are being replaced by the young and careless. The students seem to enjoy it, in any case. They're paying attention to their studies too, which is the most important thing." Gillian spoke quickly, with an air of amusement. He tended to speak too much and too quickly when his mind went to its brighter places.

Evelynn shook her head in agreement to Gillian's statement. "No," she responded. "But I do my best to help where I can. I wish he'd come, but he's a big boy. I'll let him figure his own way." She didn't want to mention the fact that he'd avoided getting too close to people since their parents passed away. Aside from she and the littlest one, he had no true ties. Evelynn supposed he found it easier that way.
"I have to agree with you," she stated. "It is the reason I came here to seek a job instead of in the town. Being here would be more pleasurable than at a desk all day in some office." It was good to hear the students now were calmer than they had been in her years. His musings about his age seemed to hit true as well.
"Young and careless, hm?" Evelynn couldn't help but chuckle at this. "You don't seem very careless to me. Carefree would be the word I'd use." His attitude was certainly amusing. He was so bright and airy, a kind soul. "Perhaps, after you've offered any advice on getting a job in the library, you'd like to get coffee with me?" It was more direct than she normally was, but he had such a light personality that she felt calm enough to ask straight out.

"If ever you need any help with anything to do with his education I'll happily provide you with whatever resources I have," Gillian offered.
"Desk jobs" he wrinkled his nose in mock disgust. "I don't blame you for not wanting that. It seems a very dull and oppressive type of profession." He remembered when he was undecided about his future he had vehemently protested any suggestions of such types of work. It would be somewhat like being caged, he imagined.
Gillian grinned widely in reaction to the bold offer. "That would be wonderful Evelynn." In a quick motion he moved from behind the couch to sit on it's over-stuffed cushions, vaulting over it's back. He smiled blankly for a moment, before catching the words that eluded him in the breathless seconds of his landing. "A job in the library? That shouldn't be too hard." He reached for a pen and notebook, jotting down her name on a fresh page. "Do you have a resume? Any references?"

Evelynn chuckled a little at Gillian's offer. "Thank you," she responded. "I doubt he will find the idea as tempting as I do." She giggled again at his commentary on the thought of a desk job. That was the reason she was here to search out a job.
The grin was incredibly contagious and Evelynn found herself grinning along side him. In hardly a blink of an eye he was sitting next to her on the couch. She waited silently for him to say the words that were hanging in the air around him. "Oh yes," she responded, pulling a simple sheet of paper from her bag. It listed several references, the latest from a bookstore in town. "Here you go. All my references are listed at the bottom of the resume."

Gillian took the sheet of paper gently and spent a few minutes examining it. His brow creased slightly in concentration, but the change of expression did nothing to dampen the general happiness he seemed to emit. He chewed on his tongue a little as he underlined certain sentences, and circled others, to draw attention to them when the headmaster inevitably looked over the document.
When Gillian set aside the paper his brow flattened and the exuberant smile returned. "Well, that looks good. Now for the fun bit" He winked playfully at Evelynn. There was no air of professionalism in this job interview, not even for show. That sort of atmosphere always made people nervous Gillian thought, and you couldn't rightly judge the personality of someone who was nervous. "I have to ask you a couple of questions. Standard interview stuff, for the Headmaster to read with your resume. Dull, I know" He chuckled. "Why would do you want to work here?"

Evelynn waited patiently as Gillian looked over her resume. She fought the urge to fiddle with the hem of her shirt as she often found herself doing. It wasn't long before he'd thoroughly examined the document and returned his attention to her for the rest of the screening process. His wink brought a small laugh and a grin to her features. It seemed he didn't want her to leave without her cheeks aching. It took only a small moment for Evelynn to formulate her answer to the first question. "I've always loved the idea of a library. Much of my time spent here at school was in the library, actually, so I'm very familiar with it already," she answered smoothly. With a small shrug she added, "I'd rather work with the children than with adults on this island. Children can be so clever sometimes. It's a wonder what they do."
