The chimes of a distant clock counted off the hours in sequence. It was seven o'clock. Still twilight. The little town seemed deserted, as if no one lived there. Then again, this was the first time Rosaline had really visited the town. Perhaps it was just custom to retire to the household at such an early hour. But she wasn't part of the town, the traditions, and she rather enjoyed the silence settling in around her.
In the distance a light, larger than the lights she'd seen in the house windows, and too dim for a shop's nighttime sign. It was a strange sort of light. Normally Rosaline would have walked on by, but tonight she was drawn towards that eerie sort of light. She wore a simple dress tonight; not being in the castle she was allowed to wear what she pleased, and this was the only thing she could find. The sleeves were long, but loose enough on her arms that the breeze could tickle her skin, and it stopped just above her knees and let her legs feel that breeze too.
It wasn't long until the source of the odd light came into view. A fountain, large, but not terribly ornate. Right in the center of the village square, or at least it looked like the village square. The light cast shadows about her and made Rosaline's dress seem a shade of blue instead of the white that it was. Voices, whispers, echoed in her head, sounding close to her, yet distant. And still no one was there to utter a sound. But the whispers continued.
Rosaline was rooted to the ground where she stood, transfixed by the water of the fountain, by the light it gave off, the whispers in her head.

Danny sat on the crumbling doorstep of an abandoned shopfront, his head tilted back against the door, his eyes closed. The glittering blue-silver light from the fountain cast itself across his face, making his skin glow eeriely against the night. He was listening to the soft trickle of water, to the fountains whispers. It told him secrets. Forgotten things. Things he could barely understand. But still he listened, hungry for the knowledge it gave him.
The whispers began to change, he noticed they weren't just for him anymore. The soft, intruding sound of footsteps came next. He opened his eyes to watch the girl that had come to the Vox Vocis this lonely night. The light made her beautiful. Or perhaps she already was?
Danny tried not to think. 'Spooky, isn't it' He said, smiling.

Through the other whispers that held her where she stood, that said so sweet, and yet so frightening, of things in her ear, she heard another voice. It was clearer, much clearer, than those of the whispers, yet it sounded as just a whisper itself. But this voice was deep whereas those in her head were too breathy to have any distinction at all.
That voice dragged her from the trance she'd been put into. Rosaline's eyes drifted around the outer edges of the square until they came to rest on another figure. Slowly, with a movement that made it seem as if she were moving through water, she walked to the boy. His face was familiar, having shared a class or two together, but she couldn't place his name. They hadn't interracted much at all. "What was that?" she asked him.

Danny smiled and sat up a little straighter as she approached. 'I said this place, the voices, its kind of eerie, isn't it?' He said softly, with a knowing smile.
The whispers in the background seemed to dull, so that he could barely hear them over the chattering flow of the fountain. Without thinking about it, he moved over on the step, so that the girl could sit if she wished. 'I'm Frank' He introduced happily, finding the prospect of company on this night appealing.

Rosaline merely nodded. It was rather creepy, she finally took notice when he said it. The light was fading from the fountain so that brilliant blue it cast was reduced to no more than a tint in the night. Even the whispers in her head seemed to fade into the duller sounds of the night. The girl found herself sitting next to the boy on the step, no memory of actually having sat down lingered in her mind. Though she supposed she was just too occupied with other things.
"Rosaline," she introduced herself, an automatic action, after Frank spoke his own name.

'Lovely to meet you, Rosaline' He smiled at her, breathing in the cool night air deeply. It was tainted with the scent of mildew and rotting wood from the door behind him, and more faintly, the crisp, almost sweet scent of the flowing water of the fountain. He thought for a moment, that the fountain must have been the only pure, untainted thing on this strange little island.
He tilted his head back to glance at the sky, then brought it back down, to level his eyes with Rosaline's. 'Not that I am ungrateful of the company, but I must wonder what would bring you down here on a night such as this?'

Rosaline could almost feel the smile he gave her, though after a moment she turned her head to see it as well. Her mind was still distracted, searching for those whispers she'd heard only moments before. "Who are they?" she asked, her voice hardly above a whisper herself. "The voices." He had to know what she meant. He had to have heard those voices too. Didn't he?
A shiver ran through her, a glimmer of things she couldn't understand in that place. "Simply to leave that castle they call a school. I'm not a fan of confined areas," she answered. "What of yourself?" she countered.

'Those voices? They are the secret keepers of this island. They are it's magic, it's true embodiement ' he said softly, watching the fountain, straining his ears to catch the whispers. 'Its been here for longer than anyone could remember. This town was built around it. There is even a legend that says the original Magus built it, when they discovered the Forest Mages.' He looked at her, his face lacking any expression. 'Most new students here don't admit to hearing the voices - they think they're going crazy'.
'I see. The Academy can get a little restrictive at times.' He said knowingly 'Me? I'm just here to listen. Its the best time to come here, with no people, no distractions. The voices speak the clearest when they speak only for you'. His eyes flashed as moonlight glinted off the the water. So many things he had been confused about..... he understood now. The voices had removed any doubts, any misconceptions.

Rosaline could only look on at the fountain at Frank's answer. "So were they real people once? Or were they always just disembodied voices?" She turned her attention back to the person at her side. Crazy. How many times had she been called that in her life? How many times had she called herself that? Certainly there were a handful enough. "Perhaps we are. Perhaps we all are. Perhaps it makes us this way when we come here."
The girl didn't make a comment in response to the last thing Frank said. Instead she just curled her legs to her chest, leaning her head over to rest it in Frank's lap. She felt like a little girl again, staring wide-eyed at the fountain like a candy shop with forbidden sweets stashed away on the shelves.

"Maybe. It's not really clear. I'm not sure that anyone here now would know the answer to that question." He had thought many times of the owners of those voices while he had been sat here. How they knew so much. Why they lingered and told him their secrets. What they were. None of his research had turned up any answers to his questions. His only hope was to ask one of the Forest Mages, and he was reluctant to do so.
His body tensed in surprise as Rosaline leaned on him. Forcably, he relaxed himself, tilting his head back to rest on the door behind him.

The girl could feel her new companion tense up as she leaned against him. Was he unaccustomed to human touch? To any touch? As distant as she had been with her own relatives, at least she understood the feel of another body against hers, even if it wasn't always a feeling she enjoyed. For a while her mind drifted like this, until she forced it away from the clouds to her body again.
"It makes your head dizzy just thinking about it," she said after a while, a reference to the voices. "What about the glow? The fountain was glowing. It's why I came over here. 'Cause I saw it."

Danny frowned just a little, barely noticably. The fountain's eerie light was something else his research had known no answers to. He had learnt only the rumours. 'Yes, the fountain always glows. I think its beautiful.' For a moment his demeanor turned shy, but vanished as soon as he began talking again. 'I only know the stories of why the fountain glows. Some say the fountain is the glowing life-force of the entire island. Other legends say that the glow is the souls of the voices, leading people to the Island.I can't find any definate information about it'
He glanced down at Rosaline, wondering silently why she was here, talking to him. Most didn't bother with his company. He wondered, also, why he didn't mind her company so much. Any hints of friendhip, or even only familiarity was dangerous. He should worry, but he couldn't bring himself to care.
