The night air was cool and refreshing, the sky clear enough to see the stars above. Every once in a while a stray cloud would make its way in front of the moon and cast the world in darkness. Those moments didn't last too long, not usually. Along the horizon the beginnings of a storm was visible forming in the clouds and a small pout darkened Rosaline's features at the thought.
She'd come up to the towers to think. If what she'd been told was true, there was no leaving the island. This place would now be her home, her old one forgotten. A strange feeling of mixed relief and hatred came over her, along with a sorrow she couldn't put words to. No. That was a lie. She knew exactly the words. It was the island, the school, the confinement of it all. It was hidden in the rules and covered by the shadows, tucked safely away in the back of older minds to the point where it no longer mattered.
But it mattered to her.
Rosaline turned from the ledge where she'd been studying the skies above and towards the wall she'd come up through to the tower balcony. Stones littered the floor, chips from the ledge that had yet to be repaired. Crumpling to the ground with her back against that ledge, she wrapped her fingers around one of the stones. Her small grip wasn't much, but it was tight around that rock and she threw it with all her might at the wall in front of her. The pieces were like fireworks dropping drown to the floor.

Alice hadn't noticed that she had been joined by some not so pleasant human company until the rock that had been thrown hit just above her head, dropping rock fragments into her short hair. She'd had her nose in a book again, one on human forms of conception. She had been unsuccessful in trying to find something that would help her but she found this equally fascinating. She wrinkled her tiny nose in disgust and shook her head to get rid of some of the dust and rocks that had fallen into her hair. "Whatever it is you don't have to take it out on me, you know. I was minding my own business." She huffed.

Rosaline's eyes instantly went wide at the sound of a voice coming from the shadows. From the sound of it, too, the voice was right beneath where the stone had hit. The girl bit her lower lip, chewing it nervously as she tried to focus her thoughts and respond. "I wasn't aware there was someone else up here," she said hastily. "I apologize. Next time I'll take my aim somewhere else."
(gah >< sorry its not the best right now)

With a sigh, Alice closed her book with a snap and clutched the cover to her chest. She had been hiding up here for a reason, she couldn't just walk around school reading about human conception and taking it home for Jasper to see would be like pressuring him to get on with it already. She rose to her feet, her lithe body gliding out of the shadows. She was still upset about being hit but there was a natural smile on her face as she went to the young girls side. "There must be a reason why you are taking your frustration out on a stone, now tell me about it. I'm a good listener."

Rosaline's brows furrowed as the woman raised from her sitting spot and towards her. The confusion only set in further as she eyed the title of the book the girl had. "It is nothing," she said, all to quick and entirely with too much force. In the society she was raised in emotions had little place. They led to mistakes and weakness, and neither of those could be tolerated. "A fancy to test my strength after long days without training."

"Ah, I see. It is nothing at all but a mere test of strength.." Alice nodded with a sarcastic roll of her eyes. She wasn't buying into that excuse, there was something bothering her. She lowered herself onto the stone floor so that she was nearly shoulder to shoulder, or rather shoulder to arm, next to the girl. Stretching her tiny legs out in front of her. "Homesick? Boy troubles? Lady troubles?" She guessed. "Am I getting warm?"

A small sound, a mix between a cough and a snort, came from the girl. "Homesick," she repeated. "Why should I yearn for the place that drove me to here. Nothing but fighting and arguments. And annoyances at the fact that I'm a woman and have more honor than my brother." A pause. Boy troubles... That wouldn't have to be a problem. She'd had a connection with Christian, found herself attracted to him, but she doubted anything true would come from there. As for lady troubles she was some weeks away from that again.
"Freedom," came the only reply.

Alice was silly for thinking that homesickness would have caused her anger. Many people came to this island for an escape from their past life. She nodded her head slowly, picking at the old worn bindings of the book in her lap with her nails. "So you are angry because of freedom?" She stated with a frown. It didn't make a bit of sense to her. "But what about boys? You comepletely skipped over that issue. There is a young man out there that is completely star struck by you right now."

Rosaline nodded slowly, smoothly. "Freedom," she repeated herself. "It is a thing many would die for, and many have. And here. Here in this castle, here on this island, freedom is something we lack very much." She stood, leaving the small figure sitting by herself, and turned to face out into the night. "In the short time that I have been on this island I can see that there is no leaving. Should one wish to escape they have no means. This island has become a prison."
Rosaline's eyes darted down to the other girl at the comment of a star-struck young man. Those gray eyes narrowed ever so slightly, but the steady rhythm of her head skipped at that statement. "What boy?" she asked, her tone ever so much softer than before.

"But there are ways to get off of the island. You just have to look very hard and very closely. One doesn't usually find the way out until they have gotten everything that they needed from this place first." Alice replied, her golden eyed gaze following Rosaline as she stood. She stayed put where she was on the hard stone floor. "Christian Tait." She answered simply.

Rosaline listened intently to the girl's words. "Then perhaps I need to search harder for these ways and gain some time away from this castle." Again, her heart skipped at beat as a name was said. "Christian," she repeated his name. "And how would you know if he is so star-struck as you say? Have you spoken to him? Read his mind perhaps?" She said the last with a chuckle. As if this girl could read minds.

Alice nodded her head slowly. She wouldn't be able to help her find her way off the island, it was something that she had to do herself. "All you have to do is look into that boys eyes whenever he is in the same room with you and you would know. He is head over heels for Miss Rosaline Levarette but terrified of that feeling at the same time." She chuckled softly. "Alice is always right. Trust me.."

Rosaline nodded slowly. She had seen it in his eyes. She'd noticed it the first day she'd arrived on the island, and he was the first person she'd seen, his the first voice she heard. In truth, she rather longed for his company at that moment. The girl sank again to a sitting position next to the other girl, Alice she called herself moments ago. "Christian is a good boy, a good man," she corrected herself. "I've grown fond of him myself."

"Yes, he is a very good man." Alice agreed with another nod of her head and a small smile. She had never actually spoken to him before but she had seen him around school and had the occasional vision of him. He was good at heart though a little misguided at times. "Maybe you should give him a chance sometime? It may help you while you adjust to living on the island."

Rosaline just nodded slowly and sank back down to sit beside the other girl. "Perhaps the next time I see him I'll ask him if he and his daughter wanted to go out on the boat," she mused. Her voice was soft, thoughtful, and a small smile came upon her features as she thought of Christian holding his little girl as they rocked in the waves. "Maybe it would help."

A warm smile graced Alice's lips as she spoke of taking that beautiful little Tait girl out on a boat with her. She hoped that someday her and Jasper could do the same with a child of their own. Her gaze fell back on the book in her lap. It wouldn't help her conceive but reading it made her feel like she was doing something to reach that goal. "It will.." She agreed absently.

Rosaline released a contented sigh and she leaned her head back against the stone for a moment. Her fingers searched the ground again for a stone, but this time merely to have something in her hands she could fiddle with, not to throw upon the wall lest she discover another person in the dark. Her eye dropped down to the book still in the other girl's lap. "Interesting title there," she commented. "Might I ask... why this book?"

Alice found a rock off to her side and dropped into Rosaline's searching hands, clutching the book tighter to her chest to hide the cover even though she knew it had already been seen. If her face could heat up she would be flaming right now. "Umm..I..I'm trying.." She admitted in a small squeak.

Rosaline just nodded slowly at the girl's answer. She barely noticed when the rock was dropped into her hands, her mind not registering it, though she muttered a thank you. Her eyes had taken a distant look to them, her mind seeing something in front of her only she could see, a memory almost to painful to bare. "I carried a child once," she said, the smallest hint of a smile on her face though her eyes glistened wet with tears.

"Really?" Alice asked, her eyes widening in surprise as she turned her head to look at the girl. She was so young. Alice may appear that way but she was very much a woman inside, a little over a century year old woman. She figured that it was time to at least start thinking about it. "What was it like? How did you feel?"
